Avoiding Clichés: What NOT to do this Valentine’s day

Valentine's day

Love it or hate, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. With so many options and ways to celebrate this special day, we look at the best ways to make the day special while avoiding overdone clichés.

Don’t do the same thing as last year

It may have worked like a charm last year, but this year it will become a cliché. Sure, it’s probably not going to be a deal breaker, and there’s nothing wrong with recreating some of the magic from last year. However, if you are looking to create a carbon copy, you’ll probably disappoint your other half.

Let’s not forget that Valentine’s Day is all about being spontaneous and keeping to the same rigid schedule as the previous year won’t help you in the slightest here.

Make sure to put thought into gifts

As we all know, flowers are the stereotypical gift when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Just to put it out there, this is perfectly fine – and sticking to this cliché isn’t going to do you any harm at all. However, make sure that you have put thought into the gift you’re getting your loved one. If you choose to buy flowers, don’t buy them last minute from the nearest garage; find out your loved one’s favourite flowers and have them made up into a beautiful arrangement. Add a note to the arrangement and say something that comes from the heart and sounds like you – not something cheesy you’ve found online.

Also, stay away from lingerie

What else shouldn’t you buy for the day? Lingerie.

This is the definition of a cliché, and what’s made worse is that every lingerie shop in the land will be looking to capitalize on this day from a commercial point of view.

Not only are there so many elements that you can get wrong, but it also gives the impression that you only have one thought on your mind – this thought probably isn’t about celebrating your relationship. Stick to gifts that are designed to make your loved one feel special rather than objectified.

Generic greetings cards no longer work

Finally, try and stay away from being too generic with your Valentine’s Day card. Sure, you mean well, but just signing a standard card with your name isn’t going to make any sort of impression.

Instead, get creative. Tell your other half your true feelings, and it will be worth significantly more than the card you have just invested in.

Like a lot of the tips we have discussed, there is an element of cliché about this – but you are at least doing something different and evoking new emotions this February.

Finally, find somewhere to go with your loved one that is truly embracing valentine’s day with a classy touch. Your destination on this special day can make all the difference and add a little magic to your date.
