4 Ways To Look After Yourself As You Age

As you get older a lot of things can start to happen as your body deteriorates. You need to do all you can to help keep it healthy and free from illness. Supplements are a great idea, these boost your immunity and the normal functioning of your body.

Let’s take a look at what you should be focusing on as you get older.

Diet

Diet is a very important factor when it comes to looking after yourself. When you think of health and wellbeing you automatically think about your diet and what foods you are consuming. You should have a healthy balanced diet with occasional junk food thrown in. A healthy balanced diet consists of consuming the right amount of each of the food groups.

Diet is important but alongside this, you need to be drinking at least 2 liters of water each day, this equates to about 8 glasses. If you find yourself forgetting why not think about getting one of those water bottles with the times on that you should be drinking throughout the day.

Exercise

Exercise goes hand in hand with diet. You can of course have a healthy lifestyle without exercise but you will really need to watch what you eat more stringently. Just 30 minutes of exercise a day will make you feel fit and well. When you exercise your body releases hormones that make you feel good. Therefore, along with many other great benefits exercise makes you feel happy and can combat any mental health problems such as depression.

Sleep

You should be aiming for at least 9 hours of uninterrupted each night. If you are struggling to get this amount on a regular basis then you will continuously wake up tired and not feel refreshed. This will have an impact on your mood and how you react to different situations. Lack of sleep has also been linked to poor memory and brain degeneration.

When you are sleeping the mind and body are busy recharging your depleted batteries. Your body is also sending messages to cells to fix themselves and any other problem that may have cropped up during the day.

If you are finding you regularly wake up with leg cramps during the night you may have a problem with your circulation. You may need to look into buying some compression socks to alleviate this issue. You can find out more about compression socks and their uses here.

Health Check-Ups

Finally, you should be having regular checkups as you age. Your doctor may call on you for your yearly checks. You will also be invited for regular routine screening checks, specifically breast and bowel. Problems with these are far more prominent unfortunately as you reach the age of 65+.
