Why We Need to Test RCDs or Safety Switches

Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales, Australia and is located on the southeastern coast. Sydney is also the largest city in terms of land area and population. Just like any other major city, Sydney is not free of crime. However, tourists are relatively safe in the main areas of the city. Sydney also always takes every measure to keep its residents and visitors safe.

For Sydney residents, the city is always trying its best to keep them safe at homes or their workplace. New South Wales’ governing body had established policies, regulations, codes, and standards that must be followed for residents’ safety. One of these safety standards is to have RCDs installed at homes and offices and have these RCDS undergo a test and tag in Sydney to assess if they are working correctly.

What is an RCD?

RCD is short for Residual Current Device. RCD is an electromechanical device that is installed in your electrical system. Also known as the safety switch, the RCD shuts the flow of electricity once it detects an abnormal surge of current, which can damage your electrical appliances and harm people through electrocution to the point where you need someone like this Electrician Elwood to come out and fix the problem.

How do RCDs work?

A residual current device protects you from an electric shock. When a safety switch detects a current leak, it immediately turns off the electricity within milliseconds. A current leak is what happens when the current from a faulty electrical system transfers to your body.

RCDs are different from circuit breakers or fuses. Circuit breakers and fuses shut down the flow of electricity to protect the circuitry. Circuit breakers cut the power when there is too much current flowing through the circuits.

Too much current coming from a power surge or lightning strike can overheat an electrical appliance or wiring, causing a fire. Circuit breakers and fuses do not protect people directly. On the other hand, safety switches are designed to precisely monitor if a current has transferred to a person’s body.

The Need to Install RCDs

It is required in New South Wales that offices should pass the safety standards as outlined in the Management of Electrical Risks in the Workplace section of the WHS ACT. Sydney legislation specifies that offices should have at least two RCDs or safety switches installed – one must be installed on the PowerPoint circuit, while the other on the lighting circuit.

Other electricians recommend installing a safety switch for every type of circuit to provide full protection for office employees.

The Importance of RCD Testing

To ensure that the safety switches are functioning properly, they should be tested regularly. Two types of testing can be performed for RCD or safety switches. The user can easily test if the RCD works properly by pressing the test button located on the device. If the electrical system connected to the RCD switches off, then the RCD is working.

However, if the electricity did not shut down after pressing the switch, the RCD may be damaged or faulty. Get a reputed professional perform the service of test and tag in Sydney. These certified RCD testers can analyse all the RCD devices installed at your workplace.

Since residual current devices or RCDs are designed to save people from getting electrocuted, these devices must be working properly. Having them tested and tagged regularly will enable you to have peace of mind in your workplace.
