Why Makeup Can Help With Your Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we feel like this is a good place to talk about the relationship between makeup and mental health.

Makeup has gotten a bad rap when it comes to mental health. It’s been associated with people who are too worried about how they look, obsessing over their appearance until it starts to drive them to the point of a crisis. There is definitely a conversation to be had about beauty standards and mental health.

With that said, there are also some benefits to makeup that can help you improve your mental health. Here are a few benefits.

makeup, mental health

It Can Boost Your Creativity

You can improve your mental health in many ways. Get more sleep, work out, take breaks, remove stresses, and so on. Another way you can improve your mental health is to stimulate your mind. By being more creative, it opens up your brain to more ideas and keeps you sharp as you age. That’s why many artists stay creative and mentally well as they get older.

In a way, makeup is an art. You can be creative with your foundation, eyeshadow, brushes, and so on. You can try different combinations and see how they work. The creativity that makeup gives you is definitely a plus side.

We say to take some time to experiment with your makeup. Not only can you find a fitting work that you’ve never considered, but you can keep your mental health up.

Makeup is Calming and Distracting

Many people suffer from anxiety or depression. If you’re one of these people, you may find comfort in the ritual of makeup. Putting on makeup can calm you and keep you occupied, which helps with both anxiety and depression. Obviously, it won’t magically cure you, but it can help, along with having other routines as well.

It Can Make You Confident

Again, there is a beauty standard issue we need talk about, but when you put on makeup and you look better, it can improve your confidence, and thus make your mental health skyrocket. Putting on a little bit of makeup can make you smile, and we say it’s worth trying even if you don’t like makeup. We believe every person should put on a bit of makeup, even the guys!

Everything in Moderation!

With that said, we know some people can get too obsessive over their appearance and spend money they don’t have on makeup. If this is happening to you, take a little breather. Think about what you can do to relieve your mental health instead. Try taking a walk outside, going on a jog, or rearranging the house. If there is something bothering you, try to relieve your stresses instead of letting the problem fester.

Mental health is no joke. We have made some great strides towards treating our growing crisis, but it’s not enough. Being aware of your mental health and the health of others is good for all, and we recommend you do just that.

Getting The Help You Need

If you, your child, or someone else you know is dealing with a tough time, treatment should be an option. No one should have to go alone without proper mental health care. Talk to someone who cares about you, and don’t forget to be nice to the people who are less fortunate. What you can do as well is to look online counseling if you have a problem and don’t have the time to visit a counselor in person. Click here for more information about that option.
