10 Ways to Self-Motivate Yourself While Working

Motivation is a driving force that helps us achieve some incredible things throughout life. When we’re motivated, it feels like nothing can stop us and that everything is possible. Be it a small task that can be achieved in the next hour or a long-term goal that spans several years, motivation can give you the boost you need to make it through even the toughest times.

However, self-motivating yourself can be tricky if you’re not mentally trained to do so. In fact, motivation can swing the other way and before you know it, you’re going to have trouble dealing with your lack of enthusiasm and you’ll quickly feel depressed by even going into work if you’re not careful. Luckily, there are many tricks to self-motivation and in this article, we’re going to go through 10 different ways to keep your spirits high when you’re at work.

1. Why Do You Work?

Remind yourself why you work in the first place. Is it because you’re a working person that needs to provide for their family? Is it because you’re saving up for your retirement so you can live comfortably in the future? Or are you at your workplace because you’re passionate about what you do? There are plenty of different reasons to work, which is why it’s important to actually remind yourself now and then why you bother to get up in the morning and drag yourself to the office.

2. What Makes You Happy?

What does it take to make you happy at work? Is it meeting the goals you set? Is it doing a good job and being commended for it? Or is it just knowing that you’re working hard for the sake of your family back at home? There are plenty of reasons to be happy at work–you just need to find them out for yourself.

3. Do You Feel Comfortable?

Are you comfortable at work? Does your chair make your back hurt and kill your motivation? Do you need more comfortable clothing? Even if you’re working at a hospital, it doesn’t mean you need to wear the same scrubs as everyone else. If it makes you feel more comfortable at work, browse scrubs here and look for something that helps you stand out or makes you happier with yourself. Comfort is an incredibly important feeling when you’re working and you need to find ways to get more comfortable with your work if you want to motivate yourself to do a good job.

4. No More Excuses

Excuses are the bane of every productive employee. Are you really unable to work because your computer isn’t working properly? Or could you just load up your laptop and continue your tasks? Are you really feeling sick and unable to work, or are you just being lazy because you had a bad night? Cut out the excuses and you’ll find that you can motivate yourself to be a better employee.

5. Listen to Music

Got a boring task? Don’t worry–that’s when music comes in handy! Plugging in some headphones and listening to some soothing music can be a great way to motivate yourself to get some work done. If your tasks require a lot of mental focus and thought, then you may want to skip music that has lyrics and instead focus on instrumentals.

6. Don’t Be Afraid

Don’t be afraid of failing at work. It’s stressful to think about the mistakes you’ve made and it’s actually pointless to fear failure. This is because failures happen to everyone. No one is perfect and people learn from their mistakes, but to improve your ability to work it requires you to embrace your failures so you can work around them in the future. In short, if you’ve recently caused a problem at work, don’t let it get to you and constantly strive to improve yourself instead.

7. Take Regular Breaks

Everyone needs a break now and then. You don’t need to feel like you’re stuck at work with no way out. It’s important to take breaks now and then, even if it means just taking a walk around the office or going outside for a drink. Give your mind some time to relax and unwind so that you’re not stuck in your office for too long.

8. Pat Yourself on the Back

Reward yourself for your efforts. Even if it’s just a pat on the back, you need to have something to look forward to if you want to self-motivate yourself. There are many different ways to reward yourself. It could be something simple such as treating yourself to a nice dinner after finishing a project, or it could be putting some of your wages towards a holiday that you want to have in the future. Having something to look forward to is a great way to motivate yourself and convince you to work extra hard.

9. Embrace Your Colleagues

Your workplace colleagues will likely always be there for you. They’ll help you get work done, they’ll split the labour that has you work extra hard and they’ll give you plenty of advice if you’re new to a workplace. Just don’t forget that you’re not alone in the office. There are people around you that can help make your life at work a lot easier if you’re kind to them and interact with them on a regular basis in order to build a working relationship.

10. Remove Distractions

Distractions are arguably the most problematic issue in the workplace. Whether it’s a loud employee shouting all the time or a boss that loves to micromanage, these are all things that will kill your motivation if you allow them to fester. Instead of standing idly and letting these things happen, find ways to overcome these distractions so that you can be more focused on your work and motivated to try harder.
