DIY: How to Make Homemade Air Fresheners

Source: Midwest Fragrance Company

Do you love to keep your home smelling fresh and sweet, but tired of watching candles because you can't leave it burning or using electricity on plug ins and oil warmers. Replacing air freshners on a regular basis can be quiet expensive and once candles are blown out the scent becomes lost in the air. Follow this tutorial to create your homemade air freshners.

Things you will need
a.) Baking soda
Sidewalk Chalk
b.) Non-toxic sidewalk chalk (optional)
c.) Fragrance or Essential oil (of choice)
d.) Containers
e.) Grater
f.) Aluminum foil/napkin

1. Grate the chalk on the napkin; the ingredients measurement is based on the size of the container (no specific measurement necessary)

2. Mix the grated chalk until the color blends completely

3. Add drops of the fragrance oil to the mixture

4. Stir in the baking soda, it will form wet balls but continue to stir and press out the balls until its blended into the baking soda.

Pepper Shaker
 5. You can use a cheese/pepper shaker container that has tiny holes to release the scent to place the ingredients.
6. You can also make a paper funnel to pour the ingredients into the containers.

7. Do not fill the containers completely,  so that when the scent fades you can add more drops of fragrance oil to the mixture and it will be much easier to shake or stir.

How to Repair a Broken Lipstick?

If lipsticks are not kept at the right temperature it can melt and lose its strength making it more susceptible to breaking or melting completely.

Just in case you shop online this should be known to you. Frequently we buy lipsticks online and they arrive broken or our lipsticks might fall from our hands, counter and break and if we have kids around we all know what might become of our lipsticks. One way to salvage broken lipsticks is buy depotting.

If you have ever bought or splurge on your favorite lipstick and only when you're getting ready to use it you realize it's broken. Not a good thing!!! You can easily fix your broken lipstick by applying heat with a blow dryer or matches by heating the ends and putting it together.

1. Start with clean hands
2. Heat the lipstick stub with match or blow dryer to melt the product until it's soft and creamy and extract the broken piece of lipstick from the tube and roll up the remaining stub as much as possible.
3. Use the blow dryer or a lit matchstick to slightly melt the broken pieces.
4. Stick the top part of the lipstick back onto the base and place it into a fridge until cool completely.
5. Remove the lipstick and smooth out the lumps, if there is any with your fingers or a toothpick.

*You can heat the stub over hot water, so the lipstick will be melted as a glue like consistency and allow the broken part to be stuck firmly to its base.

If you don't want to go through that much trouble you can simply use a lip brush to apply the lipstick to the lips and you can scoop the remaining lipstick into a small container (empty lip gloss jar), apply heat until melt then allow it to set and cool in the fridge.

Preventive tip
Place melting lipstick in a refrigerator for 20 minutes or more, so that it can regain its consistency.

Ipsy January 2014 Glam Bag review

Jan 2014 Glam Bag
I have recently received my Ipsy Glam bag and now I'm making my review on the products included in my glam bag. This month Ipsy bag was mostly skin care products and less make-up items. The products where of small sample sizes and not full sized products.

If you wish to subscribe, then you can sign up using my referral link: Ipsy

I have seen some people have been complaining about the scent of the bag and I must admit that my bag smells more like new fabric. it's not a wonderful scent but it's not bad like how some say it is.

Included in my Jan Ipsy 2014 Glam Bag were:

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair deep conditioning mask designed to repair dry, damaged or chemically treated hair. This products smells very good and judging by the ingredients included I think it makes your hair feel extra soft than normal. It claims to replenish, restore and repair hair and it should be used after shampooing and it works better if left in hair for 3-5 minutes before rinsing.

Mica Beauty cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm: This tinted lip balm is cakey, you can use your fingers to apply or a lip application brush. I got it in the color Fiesta #6, the color is pretty but the application is dry rather than moisturizing.

Nourish Organic Lightweight Moisturizing Face Lotion: This moisturizer can be used before applying makeup (foundation, concealer, powder etc.) It contains Moroccan Argan Oil which will help to hydrate and replenish the skin, rosewater to even out the skin tone and texture and Shea butter to locks in moisture. It is an all natural product and it smells a little like the peel of an orange. I applied this to my face and it add a little sheen, so I would recommend it for people with dry skin.

Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow Creamy Eye Pencil: The eye pencil is a sample size that I received in the color pearl. I have not tried to sharpen it, but I have read other reviews claiming that it can be sharpened.

Influenster Vox Box 2014: Gillette Venus Embrace Sensitive Skin Review

Shaving for me is like a daily habit, I often times get miserable when I feel that prickly hair growing back within less than a week. I have tried, use and reused several methods of hair removal tools. But is there really a trick to achieve that long lasting smooth skin? Why do the hair always grow back? Some hair removal tools and remedies swear by their name, but it just doesn't work as how it's supposed to.

I have recently received my Gillette Venus Embrace Sensitive razor - a perfect match for women with sensitive skin, and I have tried and tested the quality of the product. The razor features 5 blades that are closely space together with an increased glide enhancer that has a protective ribbon of moisture that has a touch of Aloe, which provides a closer shave with less irritation. This razor is suitable for sensitive skin, but it works best with less hair, thicker hair would be a little more difficult to remove.

2 Cartridges/Blades
Shower hook & Razor stick
I love the fact that I can hang it in my shower after I have finish shaving, until next use. I can also purchase the blades and attach it to the stick instead of buying a new razor stick + blades.

Homemade Remedies to Eliminate Dark Spots

Dark Spots on Cheek

Having problems with dark spots, acne marks uneven skin tone and trying to lighten, eliminate or restore your face to a more glowing facial complexion. This may be due to excess secretion of melanin on the surface of the skin that can be caused by the severe exposure of sun light to dark spots which eliminates growth as the melanin decreases and in turn leads to the darkening of the skin or various reasons which includes zits, acne, blemishes and blackheads. Some other factors that can lead to this condition are over exposure to the sun, hormone imbalance, pregnancy, some forms of medication, vitamin deficiencies, lack of sleep and stress. Often time’s people turn to treatments such as acid peels and laser surgeries, but there are also natural homemade remedies that can also be used to reduce the appearances of dark spots and blemishes on the face. Here are some natural homemade remedies that you can make use of:

Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is known to have a natural bleaching property that can help to reduce the appearance of dark spots and create and even brighter skin tone.  Take a freshly squeezed lemon and squeeze it and pour or dab the lemon juice onto the dark spotted areas, leave the juice on for about 10-15 minutes before washing/rinsing the affected area. Repeat this treatment at least three times a week.
Lemon juice can dry out the skin and make it more hypersensitive to the sun, so it is required to follow up this treatment with a moisturized and sunscreen.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Using Apple Cider Vinegar can help to speed up the process by which the skin will naturally shed and by shedding this can help to even out the skin tone. By dabbing the vinegar onto dark spots with a cotton ball, leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing.

Red Onions
Red Onions contains acid that has natural skin-lightening properties that can help to fight and reduce dark spots. One can extract the juice from the onion by either squeezing it or using a blender. Take a cotton ball and use it to dab the juice onto the dark spots and leave it to settle for about 10 minutes, wash skin thoroughly. This treatment can be repeated daily.

Take a fresh garlic clove and cut it in half, rub it onto the dark spots. For an alternative method, one can blend the garlic in a food processor to create a paste and use a cotton swab to dab it onto the skin. Leave the garlic on for 30-60 minutes, and then rinse the skin thoroughly.

Tomato and Lemon Juice
Use a medium size tomato and extract the juice from it and add one tablespoon of lemon juice, mix it. Apply over the face and allow it to dry for 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water.

Aloe Vera and Lemon Juice
Cut out the pulp of the Aloe Vera and let it stands for 5 minutes, then add few drops of lemon juice. Apply it to the face and wash in 15 minutes time.

Onions consists of an anti-microbial property that can help to discard acne related scars and spots. Cut, grind and separate the juice from the onion and apply it to the affected area, allow it to work for a few minutes then rinse with clean water.

Sandalwood Powder with Rose Water
Mix two tablespoons of Sandalwood powder with a few drop of rose water, then apply to the dark spots or entire face, allow it to dry then rinse.

Sandalwood Powder with Glycerin and Rose water/Milk/Honey
Use the sandalwood powder, glycerin and rose water (milk or honey) to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to the affected area and allow it to stand for a few minutes. Rinse the paste off with lukewarm water. For best results, use this remedy at least once per day until the black spots disappear.

Turmeric Powder and Lemon Juice
Add lemon juice to a pinch of turmeric powder, mix and dab it on the dark spots, allow it to set. Results can be seen in a week, scars and spots will disappear and skin will glow.

Turmeric, Honey and Olive Oil
Make a paste of turmeric, honey and olive oil and gently massage it into the affected area. Leave it to dry completely and then wash the area with water.
Turmeric is a popular skin-lightening agent that is used to get rid of dark spots and is also effective for quickly removing sun spots and age spots.

Potato and Honey
Grate a small potato and mix it with a sufficient amount of honey and dab it to the affected areas. Wash the mask off after 15 minutes. By rubbing the potato slices over the affected areas can also fade dark spots.

Onion, Garlic and Vinegar
Use one tablespoon of onion juice, garlic juice and half tablespoon of vinegar to prepare a solution, mix them properly. Then apply the combination to the face and rub in for a few minutes on the affected dark areas. Rinse well with chilled water after 20 minutes. With regular use of this easy and most happening tip it will reduce dark spots quickly. The vitamins, and the sulfur contents of onions and allicin (anti-fungal, anti-aging and skin smoothing benefits) property of garlic will smooth the skin texture and remove bacteria from the skin.

Cucumber, Milk and Lime Juice
Grate cucumber, add milk and extracted lime juice, mix and apply to affected areas. Rinse and pat to dry.

Buttermilk and Tomato Juice
Buttermilk is efficient for treating dark spots, likewise lemon juice. It helps to fade blemishes and black spots without causing a burning sensation.
Mix four teaspoons of buttermilk with two teaspoons of fresh tomato juice. Apply to affected area and wash the skin after 15 minutes.
The lactic acid in milk, will gradually reduce skin pigmentation and brighten the tone of the overall skin complexion. Milk can be used in space of the buttermilk, soak cotton ball in milk and dab it directly to the dark spot. Leave it for about 10 minutes, then rinse. This procedure can be repeated twice daily or 4 to 5 times per week.

Milk and Honey
Mix milk with honey and apply to the dark spots, let it stand for 10 minutes, then rinse and pat to dry.

The oatmeal powder can be used for skin exfoliation. By applying an oatmeal mask to the face and neck, it can remove dead skin and dark spots.
Grind half a cup of rolled oats, and then add 3-4 tablespoons of lemon juice to make a paste. Scrub the paste onto your skin and rinse with lukewarm once it has dried. Repeat this treatment once or twice a week.

Almonds, milk, sandalwood powder and honey
Soak 8-10 almonds overnight in milk, peel and grind the almonds after soaking then add one teaspoon sandalwood powder and a half teaspoon of honey. Mix to make a paste, apply to face and let it set for about 30 minutes and then rinse with water.

The enzymes in papaya can also help to even out skin tone and aid in the fading of dark spots. Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that exfoliates the skin and encourages production of new and fresh looking skin. The skin of the papaya can also be used as a scrub for knees and elbows.
Apply the pulp of a ripe papaya to the skin and let it stand for the least 20 minutes, wash the area and pat to dry.

Papaya and Lime
Grate a green papaya and add lime juice to it. Apply the mixture to dark spots and allow it to stand for 15 minutes before rinsing the area.
  • Depending on a number of factors, the home remedies provided may only help to reduce the color of facial spots but a lightning and not removing it completely. For your convenience, ask a dermatologist.
  • New spots or skin variations may need to be examined by a physician to ensure that the dark spots are not the cause of a more serious health condition.

How to Apply Blush According to your Face Shape

Blush creates an optical illusion which makes you more attractive and give you a more youthful glow, on the other hand if you apply too much you will look like a clown. Blush is usually applied on the cheeks and it's the last cosmetic used on the face. Choosing the right color and type of blush for your face is also important and learning the proper application technique.

Choosing the right color is important, if it's too light or dark it will look unnatural. When trying to find the best color blush always chose one that is close to your skin tone. A known trick used by many is to use the color on your cheeks after a workout or after pinching your cheeks for a few seconds. Darker skin tones perfect match would be wine or burgundy colors, while lighter skin tones would look best with pink hues.
Another factor to consider is the intensity of applying blush. If the color being applied is too deep it can appear loud or flashy on lighter tones and if the color is weak, it will disappear or harder to be seen on darker skin tones.

Blush comes mainly in three different forms: powder, cream and gel. One should avoid using cream, gels or blush with shimmer if they have acne scars or wrinkles. Powder blush can be used on most skin types, especially oily skin types and if you are new to blush then powder is a safer choice. For dry skin cream blush is recommended because of its moisturizing factors. Gel blush can be difficult to apply and it takes a lot of practice, it does not spread easily and it dries very fast. It is good for oily to normal skin types.

How to apply the different types of Blush

1. Powder Blush
Make a big smile to find the apples of your cheeks, then gently apply the brush with blush onto the cheek apples, start from the middle of the apple and tap lightly upwards to the temple and hairline. Check for harsh lines on your cheek and blend it out with a sponge or a clean brush to buff or soften the color. Always start with a small amount of blush then build up till desire, if the color is not intense enough, repeat the steps till satisfied.

2. Cream or gel blush
Use the same technique as applying powder brush, but use a stippling brush or your fingers to lightly tap the color onto the apples of the cheek and blend in a small circular motion outward. By using the finger for cream and gel blush it heats up the product for an easier application. Apply a translucent setting powder to set the blush or to get a long lasting wear.

How to Apply Blush According to your Face Shape

Long Face Shapes
Apply blush on the apples of cheeks and blend out towards the ear temples.

*Tip: Apply a cream blush with a fluffy blush, then apply foundation and finish off with a powder blush to get a natural lit from within flush for any face shape.

Oval Face Shapes
Apply blush on the apples of the cheeks, then blend with a blush brush.

*Tip: To get a dramatic look, after applying foundation and powder blush, reapply the powder brush by using an angled brush. Dusting loose powder on the cheek bones can tone down the blush.

Round Face Shapes
Apply blush in an angular motion and blend from the apples of the cheeks towards the temples.

*Tip: If you have problems with dry skin or fine lines and wrinkles, consider using a cream blush. If your skin is oily, then use a powder blush. Powder blush works better in warm temperature while cream blush is better for cold weather.

Square Face Shapes
Square faces with a stronger jawline should apply blush in a linear motion and a few inches from the sides of the nose.

*Tip: Apply cream blush as a base then use a similar color powder blush to set, this will let the blush last longer.
